Mitigation

Ben Franklin once said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." This saying has withstood the test of time and it is apropos to today’s modern building envelopes. Curtain walls, roofs, wall systems, windows and doors and the interfaces between each contain materials such as sealants and coatings that do not last forever. When these materials fail, water and other elements seep into the building and can cause great harm.  Periodic inspections by GCI’s experts can identify materials that are getting near the end of their useful life and allow for planned and budgeted repairs to maintain the integrity of a building.

Another type of mitigation is for wind storms.  Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to a building.  The defense against wind damage is windows and doors, exterior walls and roofs.  Identifying weak systems and retrofitting them greatly reduces property damage and makes buildings safer.  With buildings in hurricane prone areas, the question is not if they will be hit by a hurricane, it is when.  GCI helps building owners be prepared for the inevitable.

GCI’s glazing, waterproofing and roof experts conduct mitigation condition surveys to identify areas in need of repair or upgrading.  Our reports are the basis for preparation of a set of remediation or repair specifications.  GCI’s experts also provide quality assurance services during the work.  The result is a longer lasting and safer facade and roof.  The return on investment from our fees for this work can be substantial.
